Running with BigDog
Boston Dynamics last week unveiled compelling video of BigDog, what company officials called "the most advanced quadruped robot on earth." The video, posted on YouTube, has received more than 2.8 million views as of today.
About the size of a large dog or small mule, BigDog looks more like a gigantic fly and can walk, run and climb on rough terrain. BigDog also can carry a 340-pound load and regain its balance if it's kicked. (Hey, somebody call People for the Ethical Treatment of (robotic) Animals!)
Funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, BigDog is powered by a gasoline engine that drives a hydraulic actuation system. An on-board computer controls locomotion.
