Meme machine

The Internet is the perfect playground for memes—theories or ideas that get transmitted like a virus from one mind to another until an entire culture is infected.

For example, one of the summer’s Internet memes was the dramatic chipmunk video (the animal actually was a prairie dog) that became the basis for a number of parodies. Billed as “the best five-second clip on the Internet,” the original dramatic chipmunk has been viewed more than 7 million times.

The DARPA-funded BigDog robot video, now up to more than 3 million views since March 18, has entered the collective meme to such an extent that a spin-off, BigDog Beta, has garnered more than 35,000 views.

BigDog Beta, however, was not sponsored by DARPA or Boston Dynamics, the maker of the BigDog robot.
