Auditors slam Florida's unprotected juvenile justice data system

Florida auditor general William O. Monroe has identified IT security and data accuracy problems at the state’s Juvenile Justice Department. The department hasn’t implemented access controls strong enough to protect data about juveniles from improper disclosure or modification, according to a report from Monroe’s office.

Department officials largely concurred with the critical audit and said they would make changes.

According to the audit, the department has not developed a security awareness training program for its employees or produced an updated disaster recovery plan. The department also failed to maintain historical information needed to track accountability for data entered into its system, known as the Juvenile Justice Information System.

The client-server system, which contains data about incarcerated juveniles, has cost the state more than $56 million to develop, maintain and operate since 1995, according to the audit.
