LOC uses Flickr for photos

In the collaborative spirit of Web 2.0, the Library of Congress is inviting the public to comment and make notes on more than 3,000 photos in its collection.

Using Flickr photo-sharing technology, the library is launching the pilot project on its own Flickr page. Matt Raymond, the library’s communications director, announced the project on the library’s blog today.

Out of the library’s 14 million prints, photographs and other visual material, the more than 3,000 photos that will be available on the library’s Flickr page are those for which there are no known copyright restrictions.

The library welcomes the public’s tags, comments and notes on the images, Raymond says on the blog. “For instance, many photos are missing key caption information such as where the photo was taken and who is pictured. If such information is collected via Flickr members, it can potentially enhance the quality of the bibliographic records for the images.”
