Linux kernel updated for solid state

By Joab Jackson

The Linux development community has released version 2.6.27 of the Linux kernel. This will be the first version of the kernel that includes a new file system designed for solid-state memory technology devices (MTD), called UBIFS.

First developed by Nokia, UBIFS adds a management layer to spread out the writing of data evenly across the device so that the drive does not wear out prematurely.

Other prominent features of the new kernel include support for multi-queue networking—which wireless cards and other devices are increasingly using to prioritize traffic – and a generic framework for interfacing voltage and current regulators.
