Agencies get out of the box

Mark Carney calls the core financial system the Education Department tried to install in 1999 a “stinker.” The agency’s chief financial officer quickly grew tired of the configuration issues as well as arduous and complex testing processes. Education’s decision to move to Oracle—one of six commercial software systems approved for federal use by the Joint Financial Management Improvement Program—represents a trend: Agencies are changing their business practices to meet the software’s capabilities instead of customizing software to conform to their own procedures.

Why do I need one? You don’t—unless you do more than one thing with your computer. If the only thing you ever do is print out documents, an MFP would be wasted. But if faxing, scanning, copying and printing are part of your day, an MFP might make sense. Double that if you have a digital camera and want to print from removable storage media.

By the numbers

Hear the pitter-patter of little feet on their way back to school? The country has 73.2 million residents enrolled in schools, from nursery schools to colleges, according to the Census Bureau. About 25 percent of residents over age 3 are students. This year, 2.4 million of them will receive college degrees, according to the bureau, which reports that there are 4,084 postsecondary institutions granting degrees. Younger students will have access to about 13.6 million computers in the nation’s 111,000 elementary and secondary schools. That’s about one computer for every four students. About 80 percent of children ages 6 to 17 use a computer at school, while two-thirds have access to one at home. Students trying to budget for the school year may find the Education Department’s Interactive Budgeting Worksheet and Calculator helpful. Find it at www.ed.gov/index.jhtml.
