Was it a day that would live in infamy, like Pearl Harbor? It is likely that future historians will decide that. But on that day, Sept. 11, 2001, it certainly seemed like it.

“I immediately recognized it as a singular, historic event,” said former congressman Lee Hamilton, vice chairman of the 9/11 Commission.

“I made the analogy to Pearl Harbor; I was a little boy when that happened. I knew it would have a profound effect on America.

In Washington, with thick, black smoke rising from the wreckage at the Pentagon, rumors—false, as it turned out—spreading about attacks on other government buildings, and thousands of office workers struggling to make their way out of the city, it seemed like Armageddon.
