Best government Web sites: SSA's 'Help With Medicare Prescription Drug Plan Costs'

Not all sites must have whiz-bang graphics. For example, take the Social Security Administration’s “Help With Medicare Prescription Drug Plan Costs.” With big chunks of text and blocky HTML buttons, it looks like it was created in 1995.

But don’t scoff: This site scores consistently higher than every other government Web site surveyed by ACSI. Through a series of questions, the site can determine if a senior citizen is eligible for discounts on medications and, if so, provides an online application the person can submit to SSA.

“They’ve taken a topic that is very, very confusing and made it easy to navigate,” Freed said. He noted that such good user feedback is high praise indeed, given that users are senior citizens, who might not be as familiar with the Internet as the rest of the population.
