FBI will send states cyberterror alerts

State officials will begin hearing from the FBI’s National Infrastructure Protection Center about cyberthreats and terrorism under a new agreement. The National Association of State Chief Information Officers yesterday announced a memorandum of understanding with the NIPC, saying it is a step toward creating a full-featured Interstate Information Sharing and Analysis Center.

ISACs already exist to foster public- and private-sector cooperation in case of threats to IT, public utilities, transportation and other critical infrastructures.

NASCIO’s president, Connecticut CIO Rock Regan, said in a statement, “Over time NASCIO will work with the states and federal partners to develop this Interstate ISAC into a national model for two-way trusted information exchange.” Regan said the ISAC will analyze and disseminate information about threats, attacks, vulnerabilities, anomalies and security best practices involving state governments.

The state CIO organization will sign participation agreements with interested state officials, who must agree to handle the sensitive alert information appropriately.
