NARA gets a handle on its holdings

The National Archives and Records Administration has installed a Web application to track millions of historic records at its main storage facilities. The Master Location Register uses Livelink Server from Open Text Corp. of Waterloo, Ontario, as a front end to Oracle Corp. relational databases.

“We needed to identify a commercially available technology that was both functional and extensible,” project manager Jay Eigenbrode said. “Livelink was clearly the best suited for our requirements.” The systems integrator was Impact Innovations Group LLC of Atlanta.

Archivists consult the master register to locate and track the movements of holdings at two primary locations in Washington and College Park, Md., which store more than 1.6 million cubic feet of records in 1.4 million containers.

The materials were already catalogued, but archivists needed an easier way to deal with legacy database records. Livelink Server provided workflow management, advanced searching, and records management and collaboration tools.

“NARA’s core process requires complex data schema in the database,” said Campbell Robertson, Open Text’s director of government solutions. Application programming interfaces in Livelink mapped the schema to the front-end application.
