DHS launches technology grant program

The Homeland Security Department today announced a one-month window for state agencies to seek their share of $9 million in grants for technology projects.

The Homeland Security Information Technology Evaluation Program aims to spur the “novel use of existing, ‘state-of-the-market’ IT to remove one or more significant barriers in homeland security mission critical areas,” the department said.

The program is intended to help state agencies develop and explore new ways of fighting terrorism.

Each state, acting through what DHS called a State Administrative Agency or SAA, will be allowed to propose up to three projects for funding.

DHS will administer the program under cooperative agreements between its Domestic Preparedness Office and the department’s CIO Office.

The department set a June 30 deadline for projects in its announcement. DHS said it would review the applications by July 31 and issue awards by Sept. 30. For additional information, call 1-800-368-6498 or send an e-mail to askcsd@ojp.usdoj.gov.

The District of Columbia also will be eligible for the grants, as will overseas commonwealths and possessions.
