Joint Forces Command seeks handheld for translation

The Joint Forces Command is turning to industry for secure, portable handheld computers that support speech translation applications.

The command, headquartered in Norfolk, Va., worked with its contracting officer at Fleet and Industrial Supply Center, Norfolk, on an April 28 request for information at FedBizOpps.gov. The RFI asks interested companies to provide white papers with summaries of technologies available within a six-month time frame.

The handhelds should include an integrated audio device for speech translation, an Intel x86 or compatible Pentium architecture, minimum 1-GHz speed and Microsoft Windows XP operating system with a minimum of 512M of memory. There are other requirements.

The system must be ruggedized for long-term field use by joint warfighters, be wearable by users and be field-rechargeable. The closing date for the RFI is Oct. 31.
